Here’s what happened Tuesday (and early Wednesday) at the U.S. Open:
Nadal survives challenge from Thiem
The defending champion and No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal recovered from a staggering opening blow and fended off the barrage of baseline bashing from Dominic Thiem, winning, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), in the quarterfinals.

The match took 4 hours 49 minutes and ended just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
